As someone who works with Greek Modern and Ancient (not to leave out Mediaeval), I have a stake in the proper handling by computer of Greek text. The true and proper way to do this, of course, is Unicode; and I have several resources available on Greek and Unicode:

• My renowned site on Greek Unicode Issues, dealing with the history, selection, and usage of the Greek characters in the Unicode repertoire.
• The GkUnicode keyboard for MacOSX (which I consider superseded, but link in here anyway, since others have).
• (For the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae): the Unicode Test page, a listing of all shareware/freeware polytonic Greek Unicode fonts available , and their features.

  Obviously I have my preferred and dispreferred fonts among the freeware/shareware fonts available.

  • It's hard to find anyone to say a bad word against Gentium; the designer is a professional typographer, which does make the competition unfair.
  • Cardo, TITUS Cyberbit, and Galatia SIL are also good conservative fonts which will bear up well in extended text.
  • Alphabetum, Palatino Linotype, Aisa, Aristarcoj, and Vusillus are on the fancier side, each with its own character. I find Palatino disconcerting in its rendering of some characters, and Vusillus is too spindly for my liking. Aisa, Alphabetum and Aristarcoj are all quite elegant, and I can see myself using them in preference to Gentium in some contexts.
  • The epigraphical/sans serif niche is occupied by New Athena Unicode, an old favourite in new guise, recently joined by Galilee Unicode Gk.
  • The all-rounder fonts are the system default Lucida Grande, Arial Unicode (fine if you can get hold of it and excellent hinting, but out of date), Code 2000 (likewise, and not currently cooperating with MacOSX), and the bargain-basement Free UCS Outline Fonts.
  • After a long dearth of monospace fonts (which used to be necessary for text input in browsers), we now have the untypewriterish Everson Mono Unicode, and the more typewriterly (though not unmitigatedly successful) Monospace and FreeMono.
  • Adobe Minion Pro is clearly the way of the future, and the first of the new 'smart fonts' on the market. I look forward to affording to buy it.
